James Rodríguez to Liga MX for Club World Cup?

Colombian midfielder James Rodríguez has seen his prominence fade at Rayo Vallecano in LaLiga, struggling to secure consistent playing time.

Colombian star James Rodríguez, one of the most prominent players from his country, could become the next marquee signing in Liga MX as early as this winter transfer window, with the added prospect of participating in the 2025 Club World Cup. After enjoying brilliant moments in Europe, the midfielder has recently seen his role diminish at LaLiga's modest side, Rayo Vallecano, and may now look for more playing time and fresh challenges in the Americas.

According to various reports from Mexican media, Club León is reportedly eyeing James as their next high-profile acquisition. This move follows the delayed impact of Andrés Guardado’s signing, with the veteran Mexican ultimately retiring at the end of the previous season.

According to our contributor Paco Vela (@PacoVela14), Club León is working to secure the signing of James Rodríguez to strengthen their squad ahead of the 2025 Clausura and the Club World Cup.

It would be a GAME-CHANGER!

The report, citing sources close to Club León’s management, confirms discussions with James Rodríguez, who is being targeted as their marquee player for the upcoming international competition. León is set to face Flamengo, Chelsea, and Espérance de Tunis in the first round of their second-ever Club World Cup appearance. Notably, the Colombian star has reportedly expressed interest in La Fiera’s offer.

The Decline in James’ Career
In the current season, James Rodríguez has only appeared in six matches, with the worrying trend of sitting out six consecutive games. Before this, he enjoyed a resurgence with São Paulo in Brazil, even earning the title of Best Player in the 2024 Copa América, thanks to one goal and six assists during the tournament.

At just 33 years old, James boasts extensive European experience, having played for elite clubs like Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Everton, Monaco, and Porto.

Other Offers on the Table
However, according to Mediotiempo.com, James’ move to Mexico is not finalized. The midfielder is also reportedly considering offers from clubs in Colombia and Argentina, leaving his future destination still uncertain.

According to the specialized site Transfermarkt, the Colombian midfielder currently has a market value of approximately €2.5 million ($2.57 million), marking the lowest valuation of his career in the past 14 years. This is a sharp decline from his peak, when he was valued at €80 million ($82.5 million).
